Green tea and cancer

Green tea: nature’s defense against malignancies.

The review is intended to highlight the chemistry of green tea, its antioxidant potential, its immunopotentiating properties and mode of action against various cancer cell lines that showed its potential as a chemopreventive agent against colon, skin, lung, prostate, and breast cancer.

Dairy and the risk of colorectal cancer

Intake of dairy products and risk of colorectal neoplasia.

Studies have shown that 1000 to 2000 mg of calcium per day may reduce colorectal adenoma recurrence. Dairy products contain calcium ,vitamin D other potential chemopreventive components.

Colorectal cancer prevention

The potential for prevention of colorectal cancer in the UK.

“We estimate that 31.5% of cancers in men and 18.4% in women could be prevented if reasonable targets with respect to diet (reduced consumption of red meat, increased fruit and vegetables), exercise (30 min 5 days a week), alcohol consumption (3 U a day for men, 2 U for women) and weight control were achieved.”

Green tea cancer prevention

Green tea (Camellia sinensis) for the prevention of cancer

Green tea contains catechins which are powerful antioxidants that may prevent cancer. This Cochrane review looked at 51 studies that included:

  • cancer of the digestive tract,
  • breast cancer,
  • prostate cancer,
  • lung cancer,
  • ovarian cancer,
  • oral cancer.

Drinking 3 to 5 cups of green tea per day is safe and provides 250 mg of catechins per day.
The author concludes that there is insufficient evidence for green tea consumption preventing cancer.

Aspirin and NSAIDs for cancer prevention

Calcium may reduce colorectal cancer risk

Dairy Food, Calcium, and Risk of Cancer in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study.

This study was done over an average of 7 years. Total cancer was lower in women but not in men with the maximal benefit at 1300 mg per day. Colorectal cancer was lower in both men and women.

Fruit, vegetables, and colorectal cancer risk

Fruit, vegetables, and colorectal cancer risk: the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition.

A high consumption of fruit and vegetables was associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer; especially for colon cancer. The reduced risk was not seen in smokers.
